چکیده

This paper compares and contrasts two recent series of competitions in which multiple agents compete directly against one another: the robot soccer world cup (RoboCup) and the trading agent competition (TAC). Both of these competitions have attracted large numbers of competitors and have motivated important research results in arti cial intelligence. Based on extensive personal experiences, both as a participant and as an organizer, this paper re ects upon and characterizes both the bene ts and the hazards of competitions with respect to academic research.

Experiences acquired in the design of RoboCup teams : A comparison of two elded

Increasingly, multi-agent systems are being designed for a variety of complex, dynamic domains. EEective agent interactions in such domains raise some of the most fundamental research challenges for agent-based systems, in teamwork, multi-agent learning and agent modelling. The RoboCup research initiative, particularly the simulation league, has been proposed to pursue such multi-agent research...

Two Fielded Teams and Two Experts: A RoboCup Challenge Response from the Trenches

The RoboCup (robot world-cup soccer) effort, initiated to stimulate research in multi-agents and robotics, has blossomed into a significant effort of international proportions. RoboCup is simultaneously a fundamental research effort and a set of competitions for testing research ideas. At IJCAI’97, a broad research challenge was issued for the RoboCup synthetic agents, covering areas of multi-a...

SimSpark – Concepts and Application in the RoboCup 3D Soccer Simulation League

Simulators have a long tradition within RoboCup. In the Soccer Simulation League, one of the earliest leagues within RoboCup, traditionally single-purpose robot simulators with high levels of abstraction have been used. These systems proved valuable as tools for multiagent research, but were difficult to extend. Furthermore, there were concerns that research results would not be easily transfer...
